The cabinet unanimously approved a draft revision of the Labor Code at its session on Wednesday. "Slovak Labor Code has a chance of becoming a modern European labor norm, if it is approved by parliament," said Prime Minister Robert Fico shortly after the cabinet session. He is happy that the proposed changes will improve position of employees.
Prime Minister considers success to draw a clear distinction between the term of dependent work and work on the basis of trade license. "I hope that in the future we will no more encounter situation when, for example, a shop assistant works on the basis of trade license," he said. He thinks that employers forced their employees to work on the basis of a trade license in the past in an effort not to pay any social and health insurance premiums for them.
The revision secures the right of an employee for severance payments when his or her work contract has terminated after organizational changes made by the employer. The revision stipulates that employees will receive a two-month working notice period and also severance payment. The severance payment will be paid not only in case an employee is laid-off and employment contract terminated, but also when an employer and employee agree to end the work contract due to organizational reasons or for health reasons.
A vice-chairperson of the strongest opposition party the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU) and the former labor minister Iveta Radicova welcomes the fact that the government acknowledged arguments and comments of SDKU-DS and withdrew a part of original proposals of the party of the prime minister and Labor Ministry. She had on mind restrictions on overtime work, efforts to curb seasonal work and complicated hiring of pensioners.
